Description
Whether you're on holiday on the Aegean, at your favourite Greek restaurant or at home on the terrace, a gratinated gyros with metaxa sauce is always a good idea. Of course, Greek cuisine has so much more to offer, but it's always the supposedly simple classics that make your mouth water. So here is our recipe for gyros casserole with metaxa sauce.

Ingredients for

For the gyros casserole

1500 g pan gyros
2 onions, large
2 red paprika, small
200 g mushrooms
200 ml cream
200 g creme fraîche
200 ml Metaxa
50 g tomato paste
salt, pepper, sugar
200 g feta cheese
150 g grated cheese

Preparation

  • Total time: 1 h

Prepare the casserole

1
Finely slice the onions and peppers and chop the mushrooms. Preheat the oven to 180°C fan oven.
2
Fry the peppers and mushrooms in a little oil and season with salt and pepper. Then place in the oven dish.
3
Fry the pan-fried gyros in the same pan (in several pieces if necessary) and add to the oven dish.
4
Sauté the onions in the same pan until translucent. Add the tomato purée and fry briefly. Then deglaze with Metaxa and allow to reduce slightly.
5
Top up with cream and crème fraîche, then season the sauce with salt, pepper and sugar and pour into the casserole dish.
6
Cut the feta into fine cubes and add to the oven dish. Now mix everything together.
7
Spread the grated cheese evenly over the casserole and bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes until the cheese is golden brown.
